Impacts of Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD)

  1. A persistent fear of a social situation in which the person is exposed to unfamiliar people or possible scrutiny by others. The individual fears of acting in a way (or showing symptoms of anxiety) that will be humiliating. (Note: in children, anxiety must occur in peer settings, not just in interaction with adults to provide evidence of SAD)
  2. Exposure to the feared social situations may cause Panic Attacks (Note: in children, Panic Attacks may be disguised as crying, tantrums, freezing or shrinking away from social situations)
  3. The individual recognizes this fear as irrational and furthermore, is agitated by it. (Note: this feature may be absent in children)
